Have you read The Famished Road? At the same time it introduces a new and enlightening aspect to the story of Nigeria.

It was like years of solitude on poetry and is an example of the poetry prose I find rare in modern writers though they have so much material to work with. It was difficult to isolate what was actually happening in this book, one fantastic scene after another. There was also a sense of a rush towards the end; besides, new roads were not created in this.
The multiple personality is part of the mystery which, in Rosie Boycott’s words “adds to the enchantment”. But it is a long time coming. Conversations with Okri always include passages to which it is impossible to apply the normal rules of logic.
But if you are tempted to ask why a road which was once a river was always hungry, you ought to read a different sort of novel. Another is entitled “The Strong Ground”. Partly because I feel I need a break, but also to allow them space to sink in and breathe in me.

I felt it was about pages too long, although I do enjoy Okri’s beautiful imagery.
