A rough guide to conflict
And finishing this book one most certainly feels like a witness. A graphic novel – finally a medium I can get behind for history. So when the fighting began, it was the Bosniaks old friends and neighbors who came for them. Taking part in terrible history doesn’t preclude people from being otherwise exasperatingly human, often at about 90 decibels in your face, and Sacco understands that the experiences of those who were young and frightened and silly in basements barely lit by single candles in will determine the future in the Balkans for at least the next half-century.

Feb 04, Ruth rated it it was amazing. Having worked myself in Gorazde, I know of few more interesting gorszde addictive places. Sacco also gives us some helpful and concise background on the history of the region and the background of the war.
It powerfully evokes the absurdity in former neighbours turning on each other to kill, rape, and torture. The Serbs and Muslims had lived together peacefully for a long time, until, with war brewing, it became dangerous to do so.

Ethnic cleansing, torture, and rape seem like strange subjects for a graphic novel, yet somehow One gets the sense of total confusion, following this man rushing around between the blown-apart buildings of his city, Kalashnikov in hand. Not just one of the best things I’ve ever seen about the Yugoslav Gorazse of Succession, but one of the best arguments for non-fiction comics.
It is however understandable that Sacco tones down these elements in the present work, considering the starkness of the gofazde.

Much has changed within a year. Edin has no time to waste; he has wasted the most important period in his life in battlefields. He offers up a history of the war through interviews with survivors, many living in bombed out shells that used to be ho Ethnic cleansing, torture, and rape seem like strange subjects for a graphic novel, yet somehow A Legacy of Mediocrity A deadening force at the heart of the art form, smothering the field in bourgeois mediocrity.
Bosnians’ sense of humour shines through, such that you find yourself giggling at what seems like the most inopportune moments.
The blunt and matter-of-fact descriptions of eyewitness accounts of the horrors at Srebrenica and other places are a contrast to what is happening on the page, because although the words are shocking themselves, with stories of children and entire families being murdered, the image that accompanies these words truly made me understand the impact of ograzde was happening.
You could use this book in many ways in the school system, either just a page or two or the entire thing. They were each others friends, neighbors. Out of this came the current division of Bosnia. Palestine was a collection of short and long pieces, some depicting Sacco’s travels and encounters with Palestinians and several Israelisand some dramatizing the stories he was told.
