While any race could become an Artificer, Humans, Dwarves, and Dragonborn are the most likely. The action cost is pesky, but using it in T1 is worth the damage almost the entire game. Not exactly the best place to start, because damage is not your goal. New to 4e – Feel useless as an Artificer I’m not incredibly familiar with the Artificer class, but from reading it seems that Artificers are really good at buffing and generating Temporary HP.

New to 4e – Feel useless as an Artificer If you’re open to rerolling, you might consider changing classes. You can use the wall to seal off an enemy from the rest of the field and that battlemind can teleport in and out.
Since battleminds in 4E are nowhere near overpowered, and should in fact have trouble defending until they get Lightning Rush at level 7, it may be worth looking into if he has misunderstood some of the rules involved.
The way I imagine this is a tanky sort of artificer, who makes the area near him either suck for enemies to be in or awesome for allies to be in. Maybe if it was an encounter, or not a Standard action. In every fight, the Battlemind just teleports freely around the battle at level 1? Instead, one or two players give surges to the artificer during short rests, the artificer creates infusions, and can spend them to heal anyone.
The oddballishness of it fits so well with my theme. The Con version of Hypnotic Distraction, but slightly worse since it only affects melee. Pick your favorite striker, hurt an enemy and create some distance, and then be able to teleport next to that ally for the rest artiticer the encounter. If you are dead-set on becoming an artificer with a defender secondary role however I would highly recommend focusing on summons over any sort of hybridization. They also utilize whatever amazingly advanced weaponry they have invented, such as thopters, automatons, or firearms.
You should really just play a Warlord or a Warpriest. Dislocating – Enemy repositioning, especially being able to drag an enemy Artillery or Controller out from behind the melee makes it a decent golfbag item. And, well, missing with Magic Weapon does happen. The encounter attack is Greater Magic Weapon and how! My character also has a Dragonmark – the Aftificer of Making.
This is an extremely strong change to a major resource in 4e. Artificers are mad scientists, e4, and alchemists.
The powers are not that great, but at level 16 you add your Wis to all resists you grant allies, which is quite substantial, making Shielding Elixir quite viable, and bump your resist powers up at least 1 rating. Lots of bonus languages, and a nice bonus power for knowing things about enemies. Note also that this lasts for only one turn per encounter.

Decent, but not amazing. Artificers only start with leather armor proficiency, no shield proficiency and 1 less surge granted by the class than all other leader classes. I’m certain this will change as I learn more about the rules and begin to pretend this edition totally isn’t trying way too hard to be a pen-and-paper MMO the “taunt” and “aggro” feel to the tank classes is just repugnant to me.
